Lin’s Steam buns (Spirited Away)

Fluffy steamed buns with two surprises inside: sweet red bean or savory char siu pork. Named after Lin, who definitely snuck a few of these while no spirits were watching.
Fluffy steamed buns with two surprises inside: sweet red bean or savory char siu pork. Named after Lin, who definitely snuck a few of these while no spirits were watching.

Ingredients:


  • 1 1/2 cup milk

  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 3 tbsp sugar

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 1/2 Tbsp instant dry yeast

  • 4 1/2 cup AP Flour


Filling

  • Red bean paste


Or


Taro paste

  • 3 tbsp honey

  • Salt

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 1/4 lb Purple sweet potato

  • 3/4 cup Sugar

  • 1 lb Taro 


Or


Pork Filling

  • 2 minced shallots

  • 2 minced garlic

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with water

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1/2 cup of char sit sauce

  • Boiled egg


Directions:

  1. In a bowl add flour, instant dry yeast, salt, sugar, vegetable oil, and milk.

  2. Mix, knead for a while and let it rest for 4 hours in an oiled up bowl with a damp towel over it.

  3. Once risen, flatten dough and add filling and work your way closing the bun and steam for 8-10 minutes.
